For those of us that still enjoy reading a good old fashioned book here are Todds Removals tips for packing your books when moving house.
Dare we say it but books are not an essential item so can be packed way in advance of your removal date. Before you start packing ensure any library books have been returned or at least been separated so they don’t get packed by mistake. Likewise separate any books you wish to read prior to your removal date as you don’t want to have to unpack before you’ve moved.
If possible slim down your book collection before you start packing for your move. As always, when sorting, have two piles; one to keep and one to donate or sell don’t have a decide later pile.
Before you start ensure you have everything you need:-
- Boxes – not too large as books are heavy.
- Tape.
- Packing Paper.
- Marker Pen.
At Todds Removals we always recommend using boxes and tape supplied by your removal company as these will be strong enough for the job. Firstly prepare your box, Todds Removals recommends taping the middle and both end of the box for added protection – use at least 2 lengths of tape per edge to ensure the box will hold your books securely.
To prevent damaging your back place the box at a good height for you to pack next to the book case. To save time pack straight from the book shelf to the box this will also mean your books will be sorted not only by size, which assists with the packing, but also means when you come to unpack they will be already sorted as you like them to be.
Place one or two pieces of packing paper into the bottom of the box. Hardback books can either be packed flat or upright but never with the spine up as this can damage the books. If you pack then upright always pack spine to spine and if you have room for a third row place a couple of sheets of packing paper between the rows. Paperbacks and magazines are better packed flat. When placing the books in the box take care not to bend the covers.
If you have any old or leather bound books wrap them in packing paper before placing them in the box to give a little extra protection. Remember to let your removal company know if you have any rare or expensive books so that adequate insurance provision is made.
Don’t cram books in as again this could lead to damage. If the box is getting too heavy or if you have gaps fill them with lighter soft items such as cuddly toys, linens or scrunched up packing paper. Ensure all gaps are filled to prevent movement during transit.
Once the box is full place a couple of sheets of flat packing paper over the top and seal the box. Always use the tape provided to seal the box just folding the flaps in a criss-cross manner could lead to the contents being spilt and damaged. After your box is sealed label it with its contents such as “Books A-D” or “Daniel’s books” and the room you would like the box placed in at your new home.
If you follow our advice your books should arrive at your new home ready to be unpacked straight on to your shelf ready to read.
