There is so much to organise when moving house that the unpacking of your belongings is often not even thought about until the removal crew have unloaded the lorry and gone. Of course we at Todds Removals offer a full unpacking service as well as packing and household removals but if you choose to do it yourself here are a few handy tips.
Before unpacking ensure furniture is where you want it. Plan the room before you begin unpacking don’t be afraid to get rid of things if you cannot find a place for them. At Todds Removals our crews will place furniture in the room and position you instruct them to and will be pleased to move it if you are not happy before they leave on your removal day.
When you pack always have unpacking in mind label boxes with contents and the room it is to be placed in. It may be late in the evening by the time the removal crew have gone and you could already be feeling exhausted. Pack an essentials box with everything you need for your first night, leave bedding in covers ready to throw on the beds and order a takeaway.
If you need to assemble beds on your first night ensure all the tools you need are packed in your essentials box and fixings are secured to the bed. At Todds Removals this is a service we offer to save you time and the bother.
Clean before you unpack. This may sound obvious but sometimes in the rush to get things sorted this may be overlooked. Pack all your cleaning materials in one box and clean each room before you start to unpack your belongings.
Unpack the kitchen first. This is usually the heart of the house and once this is straight you can provide meals for the family to fuel the rest of the unpacking. Don’t forget to arrange for an engineer to install your appliances.
Pace yourself. If you have to wait a few days before unpacking in full ensure everything you need in the interim is packed together so you don’t have to rummage through lots of boxes to find things. If you are lucky enough to have time off work to unpack, set yourself a schedule and stick to it. Start with the things you use on a daily basis then finish the unpacking one room at a time and get that how you want before moving on to the next. However always check your removal firms terms and conditions for claims deadlines.
Include all the family in the unpacking. Let older children unpack and create their own space, not only is this one less job for you to do it can help children with the settling in process.
Unpacking clothes could be a time consuming task. We at Todds Removals use hanging rails and boxes. Clothes can stay on the hangers and will be transferred straight to your wardrobe in your new home. Most clothes can be left in drawers providing the drawers are strong enough and not too heavy.
As you unpack make a list of odd jobs that need doing and prioritise them. Remember you won’t get everything done straight away.
Ensure all boxes are empty before disposing of them. It can be very easy to leave small items amongst the packing paper. At Todds Removals we can collect your used boxes, paper and bubble wrap (as long as you have not moved too far away) – just give us a call when you are ready and we will arrange a mutually convenient time.
The unpacking is the start of your new adventure remember to enjoy it.
